FIFA WORLDCUP

2026 FIFA WORLD CUP

WORLD CUP

The 2026 FIFA World Cup kicked off on June 12 and concluded on July 20 with Spain emerging as champions.

This tournament featured 48 nations and a total of 104 matches, showcasing numerous spectacular plays and magnificent games. Although Japan aimed for the title, they suffered a narrow defeat against Brazil and exited the tournament in the Round of 32; nevertheless, the team’s ability to compete on equal footing with powerhouses from Europe and South America was truly moving.

During international matches—including World Cup games—national anthems are played beforehand to wish both teams well. National anthems offer a window into a country’s history; by looking up the meaning of the lyrics of an opponent’s anthem, one can learn a little about that nation and foster a sense of mutual respect during interactions.

Among the anthems of various nations, I would like to introduce the national anthem of the Netherlands, the team Japan faced in their opening match.

Below is the Dutch national anthem, “Wilhelmus.”

Composer: Unknown (originated around the 16th century) | Lyricist: Philips van Marnix

Verse 1 (Dutch)

Heb ick altijt gheeert.

(English Translation)

I, William of Orange, am of noble German lineage.

I shall remain loyal to my fatherland until death; as the Prince of Orange, I stand free and unafraid.

King of Spain, I have always honored and served you.

End.

As you will hear, the melody is incredibly beautiful, leaving an impression of grandeur and majesty. Looking at the lyrics, one thing that sets it apart from the Japanese national anthem is the mention of other countries, such as Germany and Spain.

Explaining the details would take a long time, but the central theme is a tribute to William I, Prince of Orange, who led the Netherlands to victory in the War of Independence against Spain.

The song consists of fifteen verses in total, though typically only the first and sixth verses are sung as the national anthem. Additionally, the first letters of verses 1 through 15 spell out “WILLEM VAN NASSOV”—

the name of the Prince of Orange—forming an acrostic.

Another notable fact is that it was officially adopted as the national anthem relatively recently, in 1932.

Regarding the Netherlands’ relationship with Japan, it was the European nation that conducted trade at “Dejima” in Nagasaki during the early Edo period—a time otherwise characterized by the policy of national isolation—and it is a country with which Japan has long maintained friendly ties.

It struck me that the World Cup offers a valuable opportunity to learn about and deepen our relationships with various nations—insights that can prove highly meaningful in our everyday interactions as well.

(Philips van Marnix)

WILLEM VAN NASSOV”——
